Fasting has been done for centuries for a wide variety of reasons, including
religion.
The oldest form of fasting would include a complete cease of food intake
altogether. In religion, fasting is a practice most commonly found in
Judaism,
Hinduism, Buddhism, and certain branches of Christianity such as the Catholics
and Protestants.
In the modern day world however; the two most common fasts would be the water
fast and a juice fast. It's pretty self explanatory really, but just to clarify:
A water fast is where you solely rely on the intake of water, and nothing else.
And it's the same structure for juice. No food, no soda, just water or juice.
Your choice.
Fasting for weight loss has become more common in the last few years. Water
intake is recommended on either fast, including the juice persuasion. Juice
fasting is obviously healthier due to the fact that you are still absorbing
essential vitamins and nutrients required for your body to function properly.
Always take a multivitamin when you decide to fast, or else you will become
weak.
When you fast, it is recommended that you take it easy. For once, you're
permitted to lay in bed and watch cartoons, soap operas, and talk shows all day.
The idea is to conserve your energy while your body cleanses itself. Those
people practicing this for religion should spend a good portion of the fast
meditating or praying.
But for religion or weight loss, there is no set amount of days (Unless its a
long religious holiday) that you should abstain from food. That is completely up
to you and your body. After the first three days without food, your hunger pains
should cease or become by far less frequent. But in any case, be advised that a
fast should never last longer than thirty days. Doing so could get you diagnosed
with anorexia, malnutrition, and can kill you. Ask your doctor before
participating in this activity.
