Lucid dreaming is described as knowing that you are dreaming at that moment in time. The easiest way you can catch yourself in the midst of a dream is to simply recognize when the situation just gets too crazy to be real.

A lot of people can dream of being in their own homes, and yet see them from a mirror view or it may be even be a completely different house altogether. Just think "This isn't my house!, I must be dreaming".
When you experience lucidity in your dreams, you may not always have the ability to control the directions of your dreams. This has a lot to do with how "attached" you are to your dream reality. If you know it's completely in your mind and that it's not real, you can gain better control and put more influence towards what happens next.

Lucid dreaming is considered a great step in learning how to Astral Project, or having an OBE (Out of Body Experience), but that will be described in that section.

So how do I start? Get a pen and paper and keep them by your bed. When you awake in the morning, write down your dream while it is fresh in your mind. This is an extremely necessary step in accomplishing LD.
Why? Well because we tend to dream the same things on a regular basis. Your dreams have patterns of activity within them, and once they are realized it becomes easier to realize that you are dreaming.

Anything else? Yep. Just take notice of your normal daily surroundings on a regular basis, that way when you are dreaming and you spot something out of place or completely disoriented, you can realize that you are dreaming from that point on.

So after I realize that I'm dreaming, what do I do? Just be consciously aware that you are dreaming. Start slowly. If you are talking to someone in your dream, say "I'm dreaming and you are not real, how do you feel about that?". It's a bit humorous actually, but it's a simple step in detaching from what you assumed was your physical reality.

Then just think of what you wish. "I can fly" or "I'm going to go see....", have fun with your dreams. The benefits of dreaming lucidly can be outstanding, and can be taken with us to our physical reality when we awake,
Have you ever solved a problem in your sleep? I know I have. When you dwell on a certain issue it's common to contemplate a resolution even in your sleep. And you may just find the answer that you were looking for all along.

LD can be great for overcoming fears or Nightmares. How's that? Well, when you've got that masked man chasing you through the woods with a chainsaw - and you know that you are dreaming- Stop. turn around. Say "I'm only dreaming, and I can kick your butt!" And kick his butt. You'd be surprised how that might influence your future disturbing dreams, especially if the same dream occurs on a regular basis.
Learning to be aware of your dreams, much less controlling them can take any number of time for each individual. Some of you have already accomplished this. Some of you will accomplish this tomorrow, and some of you will accomplish this within the next year or longer. But don't be discouraged if you take longer than others have, just keep trying. It's an experience that you will never forget, and you will be glad that you had the patience.
