Myrrh has been used in perfumes, incense and embalming for thousands of
years. It is one of the oldest known medicines and was used extensively by the
ancient Egyptians.
Medicinal Properties:
· Stimulant
· Antiseptic
· Anti-inflammatory
· Astringent
· Expectorant ( stimulates coughing and helps clear phlegm from the throat and
chest )
· Antispasmodic
· Carminative
Myrrh is not soluble in water so it is normally taken as a powder or a tincture
rather than as an infusion. And because it is not easily absorbed by the
intestines it is used mainly in external treatments and gargles.
Myrrh is in fact one of the most effective Herbal medicines in the world for
sore throats, mouth ulcers and gingivitis ( gum infections ). The diluted
tincture is used as a mouth wash, and is effective as a gargle, helping to
counter infection and inflammation and to tighten the infected tissue caused by
sore throats. For ulcers and gingivitis dab neat tincture of Myrrh onto mouth
ulcers and infected gums once every hour. WARNING: This will sting!
Externally Myrrh can be used in the treatment of acne and boils and for mild
inflammatory skin problems. Mix 1 level teaspoon of Slippery Elm powder with
sufficient tincture of Myrrh to form a thick smooth paste. Place on and around
the boil and bandage securely. Remove after 1-2 hours.
Magical Properties:
Used for purification, dispelling of negative and harmful energies, protection,
psychic sensitivity, protection on journeys to the Otherworld, spiritual
understanding and grounding.
