Reiki is a healing practice that was originated from Japan. Traditionally a Reiki practitioner will place his/her hands directly on the energy recipient or perhaps a few inches above them.
The Reiki practitioner will then allow the flow of "Ki" or "Chi" energy into their patient for the purpose and length of time as they see fit.

Reiki can aid in many forms of healing spiritually, physically, and mentally. Some recipients of Reiki energy can actually feel sensations that may include warmth, coolness, tingling, and other countless sensations. Not all recipients feel the energy, and that only means that they are not sensitive to it's encounter. The energy is still going through you.
Reiki can be used on all things living. Humans, animals, babies, flowers, and plants. All things living have Ki, known as life energy and that's exactly what the Reiki practitioners work with to heal and help grow healthy.
Reiki practitioners complete their work through a set of certain hand positions that allow the Ki energy to flow where the recipient needs it most.
Reiki can also be performed just as accurately through distance healing. A practitioner merely needs a picture, or another random object to act as your stand in to send you the energy you need.
Reiki can many random uses to the side, such as:

Aura Cleansing
Balancing Chakras
Healing the Past and correcting Karma
Clearing the mind
Giving a sense of peace and love
Increasing energy
And develop a closer relationship with your higher self.

Your first session with a Reiki Practitioner can be intense because you never know what to expect. Emotions or sensations can overcome you during a treatment so be sure to ask the practitioner any questions you have prior to the session.
