Sage, Sage wonderful Sage! I absolutely adore this Plant. I grew up knowing
it so well and just smelling its heady scent takes me back to childhood days of
playing in my Nans garden. There are over 500 species of Sage would you believe!
The one I’m going to cover is also known as True Sage or Garden Sage, but check
out the link to make sure of the species.
There are many medicinal uses this Plant has to offer and there’s no way I can
cover them all, so be sure to post your favourite uses.
Medicinal Properties:
• Astringent
• Antiseptic
• Carminative
• Tonic
• Oestrogenic
Sage contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and thiamine, making it
beneficial to anyone's diet. It also contains oestrogen and helps eliminate hot
flushes and night sweats making it ideal for menopausal women. Drink up to 3
cups of the tea a day, making each cup with 1 teaspoon of dried or fresh Herb.
A gargle of Sage tea is wonderful for releiving sore throats, mouth ulcers and
sore gums. Just brew a pint of water with 1oz of fresh or dried Leaves and keep
in the fridge to use as a gargle as and when you want it.
Sage contains saponins which ease headaches by keeping the blood flowing freely
and it contains carotines which will nourish the liver. It also contains
essential fatty acids which will help keep blood vessels flexible.
Drink Sage tea to help relieve menstrual cramps and you can rub the fresh Leaves
onto mosquito bites to relieve the itching.
Sage is also great to cook with. So next time you’re making soup or stew or
casserole, chop up a few fresh Leaves and add them to your cooking. And don’t
forget the Sage and Onion stuffing!
YUM!
